“I was suffering from extreme back and joint pain for last 2 years. Consulted several doctors and they all gave me vitamin D tablets. I kept taking them but with no improvement. I was utterly frustrated and then a friend of mine suggested that I should take vitamin D along with vitamin K to get the benefit.
I decided to investigate it. I will summarise what I learnt: Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption from the diet. The calcium is required for the mineralization of the bone (Deposition of calcium in the form of crystals that give bone the strength). Low levels of vitamin D leads to lower calcium levels resulting in demineralization of the bone (a condition known as osteomalacia). The demineralised bones grow weak.
Once you start taking vitamin D supplement, calcium level in your body rises and should result in mineralization (deposition of calcium and phosphorous in the bone matrix). However, for this process vitamin K is essential. Hence, if you have low vitamin K level then calcium will not deposit into your bone.
Hence, I came to know that vitamin D should always be taken along with vitamin K if you have weaker bones. I also came to know that the most active form of vitamin K is K2-m7.
Once I was convinced I searched for the combination: Vitamin D3 (5000 IU) + Vitamin K2-m7 (100 mcg), most of them were imported and hence costlier.
